Support Committee of Dr. Ayman Nour

15/2/2005
ICDS invites all Egyptian, Arab and International Civil Society Organizations and public figures to form an independent committee aiming to back the Egyptian political activist and chairman of El Ghad Party Dr. Ayman Nour in his current ordeal.

The Arab World has witnessed number of trials against political activists. Some of those activists have already managed to manipulate the domestic, the regional, and the international pressure so as to bring their cases to light and obtain wide support during their ordeals. In Syria, Aktham Naisse was able to turn his trial to a public trial against the regime which immediately released him. In Bahrain, political activist Abdel Hady Al-Khawaj succeeded to mobilize more than five hundreds Human Right Organizations whose representatives attended his trial_ the king pardoned him a day after his conviction by court . In Saudi Arabia, reformists Abdel Allah Hamed, Matrok El Faleh, and Ali El Domeny firm position and courage attracted a wide regional and international support to their cause. In Egypt, the intense local, regional, and international pressure played a very important role in freeing Dr. Saad Eddin Ibrahim and his associates.

The above mentioned cases had explicitly accentuated the importance of the collective actions in achieving justice to Arab political activists who fell as a prey to authoritarian regimes. Therefore, ICDS extols the valiant initiatives and efforts being carried out by the members of El Ghad party, and urges all Right organizations and political actors concerned with principles of democracy and freedom to participate in forming a Support Committee for backing Nour. The committee will hopefully launch a campaign that addresses the mass media, regional and international Right Organizations and centers of decision making so as to release Ayman Nour.
